Alltel debuts Text-to-Landline messaging
Messaging services provider Messaging International announced its TeleMessage subsidiary inked a deal with Alltel Wireless to launch its Text-to-Landline application across the operator's network. Text-to-Landline enables Alltel subscribers to send text messages from their wireless handset to any landline phone--each SMS is converted to voice for landline recipients, and their voice response is converted back to text for wireless users.

Messaging International Plc, a provider of messaging services, announced that its subsidiary TeleMessage Ltd has been listed in the Deloitte (News - Alert) Technology Fast 500 EMEA. The company was ranked number122 on the list.

The service follows a similar service introduced in the summer of 2006 by Sprint. Virgin Mobile USA and Boost Mobile also launched a service in 2006 supplied by TeleMessage subsidiary Messaging International. Telemessage also launched a SMS to Landline service with Telus in Canada in September 2007 that converts the messages to English or French as appropriate.

EMBARQ launches Text-to-Landline service
With more than 158 billion text messages sent in 2006, "LOL" and other acronyms like it were sent in text messages 300,000 times per minute, according to the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association. That figure could increase now that EMBARQ's Text-to-Landline service allows EMBARQ(TM) Wireless customers to send text messages to any landline phone across the United States.

Companies try to teach old phones new tricks
Embarq is also testing a text-messaging function for home-phone users in some markets. When text message is sent to a landline number, the home phone rings, converts the message into audio, and playes it back. The land-line user can reply with an audio message or press to send a canned text response such as "Thank You" or "Where are you?".

Messaging International, an Israeli company that plans to float on AIM by the end of the month, has developed the technology to allow just such a thing claiming it can synchronise voice, text, fax and instant messages. It is raising �L5m through a placing of 30 million shares giving it a planned market capitalisation of �5.8m. The cash will be used to market the technology to internet-service providers and big companies in the US, where it has most of its business.

Rogers Wireless Selects ScanSoft and TeleMessage to Power TXT 2 Landline Service
Rogers Wireless has selected TeleMessage SMS to Landline solution, powered by ScanSoft RealSpeak, for its TXT 2 Landline service. With TXT 2 Landline, wireless users can communicate and send messages to anyone with a landline. Text messages are converted to voice with ScanSoft RealSpeak, and are read aloud to the user in English or French.
